Just like the name, “Mermaid” — which refers to a mythical creature from the sea — the Mermaid restaurant in Hoi An is nothing less than a local legend. On the tip of many a foreigners tongue since it opened in 1994, this restaurant is known as “the original Vietnamese” dining experience among expatriates. This is probably because it was the first restaurant in Hoi An to provide foreigners with an English language menu. However, it’s obvious that 15 years later and as popular as ever, this restaurant’s recipe for success is not based on a written menu alone. Instead, the delicious dishes, friendly staff and family-style atmosphere have made it a favourite among locals and travelers alike.
Signature dishes at Mermaid include the Fried Wonton, Stuffed Squid with Pork, Filled Tomatoes and Mackeral in Banana Leaf. Order anything on the menu, however, and you’re guaranteed a feast for both the eyes and the stomach. What colours! Such textures! Unique combinations!
